Clean and pure drinking water is mandatory for maintain good  health. It protects you from several waterborne diseases.

But instead of buying bottles of purified water on a regular basis, a better idea would be to install a water purifier to get healthy water at a fraction of the costs of bottled water.

Many people forget the water purifier after installing it. But if you want the system to work at its best for long, you shouldn’t overlook its maintenance or else the purifier may not be able to process contaminated water.

Here are some useful tips through which you can effectively maintain your RO system so that it provides safe water for your needs:

1. Replace Pre-Filter Cartridge

An RO filter is comprised of two pre-filter cartridges: sediment pre-filter and carbon pre-filter. The former filters out dust, sand, dirt and other harmful microscopic particles, whereas the latter gets rid of elements that affect the taste and smell of water. These filters also protect the RO membrane from potential damages due to small particles.

Impurities in tap water clog filters and affect their performance over time. You should replace them every 3 to 6 months to keep the filter in optimal condition.

2. Change RO Membrane

Tap water may contain many impurities including lead, arsenic, iron, and cadmium. Water filters contain a semi-permeable membrane that removes these heavy metals from water and improve the quality of water.

You should clean this RO membrane every 3 to 4 months to get rid of accumulated particles. Also, it’s best to replace it every 2 to 3 years so that it can provide you with clean drinking water without fail.

3. Post-Filter Replacement

After passing through the semi-permeable membrane, water passes through a post-filter so that it can be prepared for drinking purpose. If the membrane couldn’t filter out any particles, this filter will effectively remove those impurities for you.

Lastly, there’s an in-line activated carbon filter that removes unwanted odors or flavors from water to provide you with fresh water.

You should replace the post-filter every 6 to 9 months, whereas the carbon filter must be changed every year to enhance the performance of the RO filter.

4. Water Tank

Clean water is deposited in a water tank after it’s filtered out by the RO plant. Make sure this water tank is clean so that you get pure water at all times.

At the end of this water tank is pressure nozzle. You should regularly clean it to ensure that it doesn’t contaminate purified water.

You can either clean the water purifier on your own or hire professional services for this purpose. However, opt for the DIY method only if you have an experience of dealing with RO filters, or else you may end up damaging it.

Hiring professionals for the maintenance of water purification systems, on the other hand, can save you from various issues. The professionals will clean its filters and replace them as and when needed so that you can get clean drinking water.
