- I was pretty skeptical about whether or not Ryan Kerrigan would be able to handle the 3-4 OLB spot rather than playing with his hand in the ground as a 4-3 DE, but I was mildly surprised at how fluid Kerrigan was overall. Kerrigan did a decent job of rushing the passer as well and the combination of Kerrigan and Brian Orakpo should be a pretty good pass rushing combination for the Redskins.
- RBs Roy Helu and Tim Hightower both put together good games in the Redskins zone scheme. Tim Hightower has always been a worker bee who puts his head down and grinds and this one-cut running game should suit him even if he's unspectacular. Helu, on the other hand, showed a little bit niftier footwork, but I'm still interested to to see if is willing to stick it inside on his cutbacks rather than look to bounce it outside.
- Defensive Coordinator, Jim Haslett, wasn't afraid to bring the funk in this one as he showed a few different blitz packages including and overload where he brought seven and got to the QB for a sack.
- Count me as unimpressed with what I saw from LT Trent Williams at times. Williams had a hard time anchoring against bull rushers on a couple of different occasions looked sloppy with his technique in the running game at other times.
- John Beck put together a solid showing that included having to play with poise against Robert Mathis and Dwight Freeney coming off the edge. Beck isn't going to set the world on fire, but I can see him as a functional QB in this scheme provided the Redskins commit to running the football and do it with some level of success.
- I know I'm not wandering into unchartered territory but I still have to type this..... the Colts are absolutely screwed if Peyton Manning doesn't make it back at near 100%. Curtis Painter was very underwhelming and Dan Orlovsky had issues with accuracy and footwork.
- Rookie DT Drake Nevis (LSU) had a nice game getting up the field against the run and collapsing the pocket on one occasion which lead to a sack. If Nevis continues to play with the kind of motor he showed in this one, he'll be a nice rotational player inside for the Colts.
- I know it is preseason, but the Colts continue to look like a defense that can't stop the run consistently and that has a hard time finishing tackles. The Colts have never made size a premium up front and my guess is that they will continue to get pushed around on the ground since they also feature a relatively undersized LB corps.
- Colts punter Pat McAfee absolutely punished the ball against the Redskins with 4 punts averaging 57.3 yards, but he did out-kick his coverage on a couple of those punts so while the total looks good, the net is what matters.
