The first week of the college football season is upon us and that means absolute bliss for us college fantasy football freaks. Some of you may be salivating with the prospect of an easy Week 1 lay-up. Others may be scrambling for a backup plan if you have a key player facing a big-boy opponent. Have no fear; I am going to provide you with some options that should help you weather the storm and bank big in the season opener.
Top 5 Starts
-
QB. Landry Jones - As far as no brainers go, your decision to start a player doesn’t get any easier than this. Jones and the Sooners will take on Tulsa at home on Saturday, and I look for Landry to make it rain! The Golden Hurricane was last in pass defense in CUSA a year ago allowing 3,668 yards through the air. TWO WORDS! START JONES!
-
RB. Ray Graham - The Pitt Panthers will open their season against a Buffalo team that went 2-10 last year. If Graham can’t exploit a bad team like Buffalo for a few hundred yards and a couple of scores, I would start questioning his roster spot. Luckily, I think Graham will have no problem carving up the Bulls and leading them to W on Saturday.
-
QB. Brandon Weeden - Brandon is fortunate enough to start against the Sun Belt conference’s worst pass defense in 2010. They might not be as bad as the Tulsa secondary, but they are pretty bad. I look for Weeden and Blackmon to be connecting all night, and on that note, Joseph Randell might not be a bad play either.
-
RB. Rodney Stewart - The Buffs travel to Hawaii for their opener, which is never a bad trip to make. It is never a bad trip to make, unless you are going to play a football game that counts for something. USC rushed for almost 250 yards against the Warriors a year ago, and think Stewart will have no problem doing something similar. Stewart will carry the bulk of the load, which is exactly why he is a sure starter.
-
WR. Patrick Edwards - The UCLA secondary wasn’t as bad as the Bruins rushing defense last year, but it was still pretty bad. You can also throw in the fact that Case last took a snap against Bruins before they promptly knocked him out for the season, with a torn ACL. Just when the stakes couldn’t get any higher, it looks like Houston might be auditioning for a Big 12 invite as well. I like the Coogs to show up and show off. Look for Case to go to the air time and time again, and his favorite target is Edwards. He is a must start.
Top 5 Sits
-
QB. G.J. Kinne - G.J. is a skilled leader and a good QB, however he is not as skilled as the OU defense is. He will not be given much against the Sooners Defense and I expect him and his line to take quite a beating. I would be surprised if Coach Kragthorpe keeps G.J. in for the entire game, as I expect this game to get ugly early. G.J. will get you some points, but not this week.
-
QB. Dominique Davis - East Carolina is easily a favorite to win the CUSA, and it mostly because of their stud signal caller, Davis. However, this week South Carolina will prove to be too much for the BC transfer. Stats don’t lie when it comes to Davis versus ranked competition. Last season Davis had a 5-1 TD to INT ratio against Tulsa and Memphis, conversely he had a 2-5 TD to INT ratio against Va. Tech and N. Carolina. Sit him, and forget Davis for the next two weeks.
-
RB. Zack Line - A lot of people are giving June Jones and his Mustangs a fighting chance against the Aggies in their season opener... I however am not. I am at least not giving the run game a fighting chance. The Aggies were first in the Big 12 against the rush and they faced much tougher running attacks than SMU. Sit Line, and thank me later. *cough* Sit Pardon too *cough*
-
WR. Jeremy Ebert - Ebert will prove to be a skilled wide-out and get you points later on in the season, however this weekend he will not be worth the roster spot. Boston College will give North Western all it can handle, which I’m afraid to say is more than Ebert and the Wildcats can take.
-
WR. Brandon Bolden - BYU is going to give Ole Miss a ton of trouble on Sunday. I don’t doubt that Ole Miss can win but it will be no lay-up. Bolden will be the number one option for Barry Brunetti, but he is young and unproven. Brunetti and Bolden could turn out to be a good combination, but I will give it a week to see how they perform against the Cougars.
